It depends on what kind of party your going to have.. =] I know that sounds rather general, but it does.
E.G- I'm having an Into The Wild/ Wilderness party. I'm going to play Eddie Vedder, Death Cab For Cutie, Johnny Cash, and Iron & Wine. Because those kinda fit with the whole acoustic-y, sitting around the camp-fire jazz.
If you're having a... dance party, play dance type music. If you're having a rock-n-roll party, play some old school rock. XD

seriously depends what music you like and what your friends like. think of the crowd thats gonna be there. If your friends like rap or hip hop, they aint gonna like, oh say, emo music or classic rock. vice versa, if you have a dance party, don't play chill, acoustic stuff. personally, i'm having a rave kinds thing, but i know me and all my friends love rock, so its not just gonna be techno.
