hey i think that you should get a dj and then get your friends to right down the songs they want to hear and give it to the dj.

I think if you want to keep it a secret, go to the radio stations websites in Detroit of all the various types of music that your friends listen to. Look for the most requested songs/playlist page for that radio station. Weigh out how many of the same songs appear on all the stations "top request/play list" and try to narrow down and choose your artist from there. I hope that helps you out! Good luck!
